Day 87–Still working on multiplying fractions, today it was mixed number by mixed number. Most students immediately wanted to change the mixed numbers to improper fractions (yeah!). We decided to use our area models to verify that “shortcut.” One student called me over to ask if it was okay if he broke his numbers apart. “Can I multiply 1×3/4 and then 1×1 and then 1/2x 1 and then 1/2 x3/4?”
