Day 86–Multiplying Mixed Numbers

photoWe’re continuing our use of area models this week to explore multiplying fractions–this time multiplying by a mixed number.  As anticipated, some wanted to multiply only the fraction parts (the top solution in the pic) and leave the whole number.  Seeing it visually though they were able to recognize their answer was incorrect.

Our goal today was to study Student A’s “shortcut”–he suggested we should rename the mixed number as an improper fraction before we multiply.  It’s amazing how much more meaningful it is when one of them “discovers” it.
