Day 38–Dividing

Ok, I didn’t intend to teach division today.  Today’s lesson plan was focused on comparing fractions.  A pair of girls suggested we divide.  Great!  Except they couldn’t tell me why, or what to divide, and worse yet–their suggestion revealed the need to address division with the whole class.  They loved the chunking method.  We’ll see about making connections with the algorithm.  Where does the 70 come from in each solution?
