Day22–Square Roots

We’ve spent the last couple days plotting square roots on number lines, including approximating square roots of irrational numbers. This group of students readily identified 2 strategies.   Today’s task:  Write a general set of instructions on how to use your chosen strategy with any number.  The first group preferred to work with the visual of a number line–I’m not quite sure how they arrived at 9.2 but I can follow their instructions so far and I think I see their number line marked for the square root of each number between 81 and 100.  The second group didn’t want to bother with a number line (even though that’s what they wrote for step 1), and went searching  for a way to divide the whole between the two nearest perfect squares.
