I don’t think students do enough struggling in their math classes. Today I wanted them to experience struggle but have no answer, no resolve, leaving class knowing that I (the teacher) don’t know the answer and I’m not going to give hints to it. To be thinking about math in a way that just baffles them and THEY DON’T KNOW HOW TO GET THE ANSWER! To be like mathematicians that have to struggle until they get over that hurdle and move on.
That is what the toothpick 3act has left us with today. Why? Because our table we setup makes it that way. We setup our table to look at two things linearly…but the relationship shown here is NOT linear. We will have to come back to the drawing board tomorrow and see if we can compare other things that we can find a relationship between.
